I Inhaled Two Vegan Coney Dogs and I'm Not Sorry About It Let's talk about my latest food adventure that proves vegans can be just as gloriously gluttonous as anyone else. I recently stumbled into Plant Based Coneys, a cozy little spot in Ypsilanti, Michigan that's doing something both brave and possibly insane – veganizing classic Americana diner food. And let me tell you, they're doing it spectacularly. The moment my friend and I walked into this clean, unpretentious Coney Island joint, we were greeted with the kind of warmth usually reserved for long-lost relatives. The menu is deliberately small – a refreshing change from those novel-length menus that make you question if any kitchen could possibly master that many dishes. These folks chose quality over quantity, focusing on perfecting plant-based versions of diner classics. Now, here's where I need to make a confession. I ordered their vegan Coney dog, and... well, I ate it so fast that when it came time to take a picture for this blog, I had to order a second one. Yes, you read that right. I'm not proud (actually, I kind of am). Picture this: a perfectly grilled vegan dog, smothered in their house-made chili, topped with diced onions and that signature yellow mustard. It's the kind of food that makes you forget you're eating plant-based – and I mean that in the best possible way. To accompany my moment of hot dog bliss, I went full nostalgic with a cherry soda and a side of mac and cheese. While the mac could've used a bit more of that vegan cheesy love (don't we all need more cheese in our lives?), it was the Coney dog that stole the show. And my heart. And apparently my ability to eat at a socially acceptable speed. Will I be back? Let's just say I've already started working my way through their menu in my dreams. And this time, I promise to try to eat slowly enough to at least get a photo before demolishing my food. Maybe. No promises though. Cons: Lack of Parking. But it's Ypsilanti so you expect that. No Bar Foot Rail for us short people. Need more cheese on the Mac and Cheese. Maybe offer it on the side or a double helping at a reasonable price. Pros: Firm Coney Dog with just enough give Fresh buns Grilled not Boiled And thankful, Order to Go, and Delivery options.
